Créé en 1993 sous l’impulsion de l'acteur metteur en scène Samuel Légitimus, le Collectif James Baldwin regroupe des artistes et des penseurs de toutes origines, soucieux de restaurer et transmettre l’œuvre et la pensée de James Baldwin. En effet, à l’orée du 21e siècle, alors que la jeunesse actuelle est de plus en plus en quête de repères et de sens, le Collectif James Baldwin, souhaiterait porter à l’attention du plus grand nombre, l’œuvre d’un « honnête homme » qui, quel que fut le prix à payer, consacra sa vie, son intelligence et son énergie créatrice visant l'espoir d'un salut pour les générations futures. Plus que la célébration d’un immense artiste, le Collectif James Baldwin se propose de rappeler à la mémoire d’un monde en danger, les témoignages d’un visionnaire et d’un authentique acteur de son temps. L'objectif du Collectif est de mettre en lumière les réflexions de James Baldwin concernant le racisme, le sexisme, les préjugés.... En ce début de siècle, les membres du collectif restent intimement persuadés qu'une vraie réflexion autour de son œuvre serait à même d'aider une jeunesse à créer de meilleurs lendemains.

Formed in 1993 through the impetus given by the actor and director Samuel Légitimus, the “Collective James Baldwin” brings together artists and thinkers of all origins concerned with restoring and passing on the work, ideas and opinions of James Baldwin. Indeed, at the threshold of the 21st century, while our youth is in search of its bearings, the Collective James Baldwin would like to bring to everyone’s attention to the work of an " honest man " who at any cost dedicated his life, his intelligence and his creative energy to the quest of looking for values which could be shared by all and which could assure the safety of future generations. More than the celebration of an immense artist, the Collective James Baldwin is proposing to the memory of a world in danger, the work of a visionary, an authentic witness of his own era. The objective of the collective is to make known James Baldwin, to whom we owe "the simple, clear, natural and effective beginnings of a reflection upon racism, sexism and prejudices". At the beginning of this new century, the members of the collective believe that international reflection upon his work could help a youth in search of its marks find the energy necessary for nurturing hope and creating tomorrow.
